Type the digits after 3. with your keyboard or the keys below.

How it works

  • Every digit is checked as you type. There is no need to press Enter.
  • Stop at the first one is a real recitation: one wrong digit ends it, as in a record attempt.
  • Carry on shows the right digit in red and lets you keep going, for learning a new stretch.
  • A hint shows the next digit and ends your run in a row, so use it to learn, not to score.
  • Your best counts only from the first decimal with stopping on. It stays in this browser.

The trainer knows the first 10,000 decimals of pi.

Learn the method first

How to Memorize Pi shows the memory palace this trainer follows: ten decimals to a room, one picture per pair. Build your own words with the Major System generator.

How to use the pi trainer

Reciting pi is a test with one rule: say the digits in order, and the first wrong one ends it. This trainer checks every digit as you type, so you find out exactly how far you know pi, and where your memory breaks.

It follows the memory palace in How to Memorize Pi: the decimals are split into pairs, each pair has a picture word from the Major System, and each line of ten decimals is one room. When you miss a digit, the trainer tells you which room and stop it belongs to, so you know which picture to fix.

  1. Choose Recite and type the digits after 3. with your keyboard or the keys on screen.
  2. Keep going until you make a mistake. Your run in a row is your score, and your best is kept in this browser.
  3. Read where you stopped: the right digit, the room and stop in the palace, and the word for that pair.
  4. Press Practise from that decimal to drill just the room you missed, or switch mistakes to Carry on to learn a new stretch.
  5. Use Learn the digits to study any hundred decimals, with or without a Major System word for each pair.

Frequently asked questions

How do I test how many digits of pi I know?
Open Recite and type the digits after 3. from memory. The trainer stops at your first wrong digit and shows how many you got right in a row. That number is how many digits of pi you know.
How many digits of pi does the trainer know?
The first 10,000 decimal places. They are generated from a formula for pi and checked against it, so every digit is correct.
Can I practise from the middle of pi?
Yes. Set Start at decimal to any position, such as 41, and the trainer shows the ten digits before it as a cue. A practice from the middle does not count as your best, which is only kept for recitations from the first decimal.
What do the words next to the digits mean?
They come from the Major System, which turns each digit into a sound: 1 is T or D, 4 is R, so 14 becomes tyre. A picture is much easier to remember than a pair of digits. Place one picture at each stop along a route you know, and you can recite pi by walking the route in your mind.
Is my score saved?
Your best recitation from the first decimal is saved in this browser only. Nothing is sent to MemoChamp and no account is needed.
What is the world record for reciting pi?
Guinness World Records lists Rajveer Meena of India with 70,000 decimal places in 2015. The Pi World Ranking List puts Suresh Kumar Sharma of India first, with 70,030 digits later that year.
