The three-digit Major System uses the same sounds as the two-digit one, three at a time, so every number from 000 to 999 becomes a single word: 314 is M + T + R, so “meter”; 159 is T + L + P, so “tulip”; 265 is N + J + L, so “angel”. Each image then carries three digits instead of two, which is why many top numbers athletes switch to it once their two-digit list is automatic.
- Pick a hundred, such as 300–399, and fill in a word for each number using the three sounds shown beside it. Vowels, and the letters w, h and y, don't count, so they're free to fill the gaps.
- Three consonants make longer words, so names and short phrases are fair. Choose ones you can picture clearly: concrete objects and people beat abstract ideas.
- Use the Convert tab to turn a long digit string into your words, three digits at a time.
- Drill your list in the Practice tab: it shows numbers in random order from whatever you have filled, you answer, then check yourself against your own word.
Frequently asked questions
- Why use a 3-digit Major System?
- Fewer images. A thousand digits take 334 three-digit images instead of 500 two-digit ones, so a palace holds more and each sheet goes faster. The cost is learning 1,000 words instead of 100, which takes months.
- Should I learn the 2-digit list first?
- Yes. The two-digit list teaches the sounds and gets you training straight away; most athletes only build a three-digit list once 00–99 is automatic, and many keep their two-digit words inside the new ones.
- Do I need all 1,000 words before I start?
- No. Convert and Practice work with whatever you have filled in, so you can build a hundred at a time and use each one as it is done.
- Is the 3-digit Major System builder free?
- Yes. You can build, convert and drill a list without an account. Signing in lets you save named lists and come back to them.
New to the method? Read the Major System guide and build your two-digit list first, then put the three-digit one to work in Speed Numbers.
