Number Memory Test
How many digits can you hold in your head? Watch them one at a time and type them back. It starts with three; each level you pass is longer. About three minutes.
Number memory test
Digits appear one at a time, about one a second. When they stop, type them in the same order. Level 1 is 3 digits, and each level you pass is longer. A miss gets another try with new digits, and two in a row end the test. You start each round when you are ready.
What this test measures
This is a forward digit span test, the standard measure of short-term memory: how much you can hold for a few seconds and repeat in order. Digits appear one at a time, each on screen for 0.8 of a second. Level 1 is 3 digits, and each level you pass is longer: a digit at a time through the span almost everyone has, then a pair at a time, with one slip allowed. A wrong answer gets a second try with new digits, and two misses in a row end the test. Your score is the highest level you pass.
How to read your score
| Highest level passed | What it suggests |
|---|---|
| Up to level 2 | Below typical. Four digits or fewer: often just distraction or tiredness. Try again when rested and focused. |
| Level 3 to 5 | Typical for adults. Five to seven digits in order: what most adults hold with no technique. |
| Level 6 to 7 | Above typical. Eight or nine digits: usually means you are already chunking the digits into groups. |
| Level 8 and up | Strong. Ten digits or more in order: chunking or a digit system at work, the start of what memory athletes do. |
A single result is a snapshot. Tiredness, distraction and nerves all pull it down, so take the test again on another day before drawing any conclusion, and compare against your own earlier scores.
How to remember more digits
Chunk as they arrive. Eight separate digits are hard; four pairs are easy. Hearing 8 3 1 5 9 2 6 4 as 83 · 15 · 92 · 64 is often enough to add two or three digits to your span the same day. Read more in chunking.
Give the chunks meaning. The Major System turns every pair of digits into a word you can picture (83 becomes “foam”, 15 becomes “tail”), and a memory palace keeps the pictures in order. That is how memory athletes reach hundreds of digits.
Practise on a real sheet. Speed Numbers starts small on its level ladder and goes all the way to the championship format; Spoken Numbers is this same test read aloud, at championship length.
Frequently asked questions
What is a digit span test?
You are shown or told a string of digits and repeat it back in order. The string grows until you make mistakes, and the longest string you recall correctly is your digit span. It is one of the oldest and most widely used measures of short-term and working memory.
What is a good digit span?
Most adults recall about six or seven digits forward with no technique, and five to nine covers nearly everyone; on this test that is passing levels three to five. Eight or nine digits usually means you are already grouping them. Ten or more almost always comes from chunking or a digit system rather than raw memory.
Why do the levels grow by two digits later on?
A digit at a time through the span of an untrained memory, so every digit counts where most people stop. Past nine, nobody holds digits as single digits any more: number systems hold them in pairs, so the levels grow a pair at a time, exactly as the Speed Numbers training does, and one slip is allowed.
Why are the digits shown one at a time?
Showing the whole string at once lets you read it several times, which turns the test into a memorization drill. One digit at a time, about one per second, is how the classic test is given, so your score means the same thing as everyone else's.
How can I improve my number memory?
Chunk the digits into pairs or threes as they arrive, then learn the Major System, which turns every pair of digits into a word you can picture. Memory athletes use the same idea to recall hundreds of digits in five minutes.
Is this a medical test?
No. It is for practice and fun. The ranges are rough rules of thumb, not clinical norms, and a single online score cannot diagnose anything. If you are worried about your memory, talk to a doctor.
